The Hidden Gem

TourismTBTourism is of course another one of so many stories about Ethiopian promise unfulfilled.  Earnings from the sector in 2008 were a platry $157 million when they could legitimately be 10 times more or even greater.  What's holding the sector back and is it on the right track to being anywhere close to what it could be?

Top Travel Destinations in Ethiopia

WonchiTB

An exhaustive list of travel destinations in Ethiopia would be much more than we could pack in a single article. So we decided to build a subjective list that reflects the personal impact these destinations had on a number of respondents to our question, ‘What are your favorite travel destinations in Ethiopia?’.

Leading off the responses is Selam Retta who - like her sister Maskarm who authors the HorizonEthiopia.com blog, ‘Ethiopian English Speaking Nomad' – is an avid traveler of the first order and has been to almost every corner of this country.

Addis Ababa: Africa's Conference Capital

As with many visitors from abroad Dumisani, a Zimbabwean journalist, unhesitatingly affirms that his first visit to Addis shines as a once-in-a-life-time experience. “I’ve always dreamt to come to Addis ever since I was a junior-high student in Harare.”

The Two Faces of Addis Ababa by Night
Untitled Document<span style="font-size: 10pt;" ></span><span style="font-size: 10pt;" ></span>

Addis Ababa is the African city that never sleeps. From Kasanchis to Haya Hulet, from Piazza to Bole, the visitor is assured of a variety of all-night bars and clubs to cater to his ‘thirst’, eyes and ears. In this compact metropolis, those who seek their leisure by night can always find somewhere in Addis to abandon themselves to cheap beers, roast meats and charming fireflies.

EV-DO or EV-DON'T?

EVDOTBA few months ago, ETC was running a widespread ad campaign touting its 'high speed' data services claiming average throughput of 300 kbps for EVDO and 80kbps for CDMA. Sounds awfully good right?  For those readers who haven't experienced the malady that is Internet access in Ethiopia, please let us enlighten you...300kbps is the equivalent of 'fiber to your brain' in Ethiopia.

Well, we know one thing for sure - ETC's claims of average throughput of 80kbps for CDMA are not just wrong, they aren't even in the same galaxy as the actual case.  So what exactly should you expect from EVDO?  We ran some throughput tests to find out.

Parking Is Not A City In China
ParkingTB.jpgSometimes, bartenders put up a sign that says 'Tipping is not a city in China' to let patrons know they should not consider tipping a distant and foreign concept.  By that token, perhaps Addis motorists should start taking putting the title of this article on signs they take to most new buildings in town.

Another Day At The Office Bar
