Fahrenheit is one of a newer breed of nightlife destinations that's popped up in Addis over the last year or two. Located in the basement of the building next to Edna Mall, it joins Wube Berheha and Panda amongst others to create one of the higher concentrations of top clubs in that area.
Nightlife in
Addis has its ebbs and flows and the Millennium has certainly meant that it is currently at a flow. There are recently opened clubs and
lounges that rival anything you might find in Europe or the US, joining the venerable Gaslight as choice destinations with few of the
compromises you might otherwise expect in Addis. Of course there is another tier of destinations with slightly reduced amenities, ambience
or the sheer opulence you can find at the top tier but which nevertheless contribute to the feeling that Addis Nightlife is definitely a force
to be reckoned with. Finally there is a smorgasbord of neighborhood clubs, azmari betoch and late, late nightspots rounding up the
lively scene and which can have you rocking till the sun comes up should you so desire.
Of late, live music has enjoyed a particular resurgence and one can enjoy some really
exceptional talent at a variety of locations throughout the city. This includes some transplants or visiting acts from abroad such as the
long standing K'Alyn at Harlem Jazz or disco act Right On at the Sheraton Office Bar. Another notable trend
on the nightlife scene is the proliferation of uber cool lounges looking to make a dent in the genre that Black Rose has dominated for so
long. Wube Bereha can now justly lay claim to being the swankiest lounge in town but
Nirvana and Le Bateau Ivre also offer their own twists for loungers.
Crowds can
vary immensely by venue or even
day of the week so do your homework
before you step out. One more note, the fiscal stability of many
destinations can be somewhat -
ummm - fluid so please check the review
date and consider calling the listed number before you finalize plans.
One of the newer entrants onto the lounge scene, Nirvana sports an appealing and upscale interior, appropriately dimmed mood
lighting and a very well stocked bar.
While the first striking thing about this new lounge may be its name (Wube
Bereha - meaning 'My Beautiful Desert' though its more accurate meaning is
something else entirely), it is by no means the last. It's
interior architecture, decor and furnishings are all clearly designed to visually captivate anyone walking through its doors. By and large
we can say...mission accomplished!
Take that, Gaslight! This may very well be the statement that Platinum Club is trying to make in putting up a nightclub that
rivals Sheraton's now venerable but still cream of the crop establishment. How well do they stack up? Read
on...
A great venue for live jazz and blues, Alize does mix it up with snappy DJ sessions that swing from oldies to reggae and other genres from time to time. It may also lay claim to the longest bar in town.
Novel and well done clubs or lounges are popping up all over the place in Addis. One of the latest is Champions, a Middle Eastern themed lounge around the Olympia area of Bole.
A rusting train lies in a dusty Dire Dawa roundabout. Addis’ tracks are
now makeshift marketplaces. But in the heart of Kazanchis a broken
train is making a lot of noise every Monday night.
If your intent is to rock the night away to the sounds of some of the best, danceable live music in the city is your object, look no further than Harlem Jazz.
The venerable Office Bar at the Sheraton Addis has remained one of Addis' top, upscale nightspots for many years. And it is aptly named for entertainment is not the only offering its patrons can find there.
